South Africa: Fake Police Dupe Victims
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Thieves in Cape Town have been impersonating plainclothes police officers and approaching people on foot or attempting to pull them over in their cars to rob them. Those on foot ask for the victim’s wallet claiming to be looking for contraband or proof of identification, then help themselves to cash. Those in cars place blue lights on the roof or dashboard and try to pull over their victims. The best policy if approached by an unmarked car with blue lights is to put on hazard lights and drive to an open, well-lit area or a local police station, then demand to see a police badge or identification. If approached on foot, demand the same identification and walk away if it isn’t produced.
