Trinidad and Tobago: High Crime Prompts UK Travel Warning

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 13th, 2009 | Trackback

Prompted by a knife attack on a retired British couple in Bacolet, Tobago, the British High Commission warned U.K. citizens about the high crime rate in the islands. Trinidad is plagued by gang-related violence in inner city neighborhoods, but violent crime has also occurred at tourist sites, including Fort George and Pitch Lake (tar pit). In Tobago, owners and renters of villas have been assaulted in the villas and visitors should stay only in those that have adequate security arrangements, including external lighting and 24-hour guard service. Police response times on Tobago had been slow but have improved. The U.S. State Department has similar warnings about security at villas and the level of crime.
