Eritrea: Government Restricts Travel Outside Asmara

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 2nd, 2009 | Trackback

The U.S. State Department advises against all travel to Eritrea because of Eritrean government restrictions on travel and the arrests of U.S. citizens without justification. The Eritrean government requires a 10-day advance application for anyone wishing to travel outside the Asmara city limits, which prevents U.S. consular officials from providing emergency assistance to U.S. citizens outside the city. Authorities have also arrested several Eritrean-U.S. dual citizens without apparent cause and kept them jailed for long periods in harsh conditions. The government also fails to notify the U.S. Embassy when U.S. citizens have been detained.
