India: Travel Alert for Holidays
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. State department issued a travel alert to advise Americans of the possibility of terrorist attacks throughout India during the Indian holiday season that includes Hindu, Islamic and secular holidays. The season includes Diwali or Deepavali (the Hindu festival of lights) and the Eid ul-Fitr (end of Ramadan for Muslims). The alert cited last November’s attacks on the Taj Hotel and the central railway station in Mumbai as evidence that hotels and other public places are attractive targets. The rationale for the alert, which expires Oct. 30, is that the holidays produce large gatherings and present opportunities for greater notoriety.
