Maldives: $3 a Day Environment Tax on Tourists

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 9th, 2009 | Trackback

The government intends to institute an environment tax on all tourists who visit the islands, assuming parliament approves the plan put forward by President Mohammed Nasheed. The “green tax” will be $3 per tourist per day and will help fund projects to convert the Maldives to using only renewable energy sources. The tax is being implemented in part to raise awareness about the urgent need to mitigate climate change. Scientists forecast that by 2100 most of the Maldive islands will be submerged by rising seas.
