Papua New Guinea: Cholera in Morobe Province

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 16th, 2009 | Trackback

A cholera outbreak that began in rural areas of Morobe province on the north coast has spread to the provincial capital, Lae. The government is working closely with the World Health Organization to contain the outbreak, but travelers should be especially careful with what they eat and drink, making sure food is thoroughly cooked and beverages are clean. Cholera is usually spread through contaminated food or water, especially in areas with poor sanitation. Travelers experiencing severe diarrhea should seek immediate medical help. Cholera is easily treatable through oral rehydration, but can be fatal if ignored.
