South Africa: Armed Gangs Target Shopping Malls

Armed gangs have targeted 26 shopping malls in Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria, prompting South African police to increase uniformed patrols, implement undercover officers, surveillance and random searches of suspicious individuals at malls across the province. The U.S. Embassy recommends remaining vigilant when patronizing malls, retail outlets and restaurants, and if caught in an establishment that is taken over by armed robbers, to comply with their demands.
