Thailand: Phuket Beaches Often Dangerous in Summer

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 2nd, 2009 | Trackback

As many as 10 tourists have drowned in the past two months in the sea off Karon beach in Phuket, in part because swimmers ignore warnings about dangerous seas. The summer is monsoon season on Thailand’s Andaman Sea coast, and part of the problem may be that tourists lured to Phuket during the off-season want to enjoy their beach vacations, and that means playing in the ocean. When red flags are posted on the beach it is best to heed them unless you know the local surf conditions and can assess the tides, winds and currents.
