Germany: al-Qaeda Threats Prompt Tighter Security

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 1st, 2009 | Trackback

Threats from al-Qaeda caused German authorities to tighten security around the country and prompted the U.S. State Department to release a travel alert informing Americans of the potential risk of travel in Germany through Nov. 11. A German official objected to such warnings from the U.S. and U.K., saying that authorities had security under control. Several al-Qaeda videos released over the last few weeks threatened Germany over its participation in NATO actions in Afghanistan, and two men with ties to al-Qaeda were arrested in Munich and held until the completion of Oktoberfest, which ends Oct. 4. The men were held “preventively” under German law because one of the al-Qaeda videos showed pictures of Oktoberfest and threatened to attack it. Oktoberfest was attacked before, in 1980, when 13 people were killed and 200 injured in a bombing.
