Israel: Temple Mount Tensions Could Keep Restrictions in Place
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Tensions on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City erupted in violence when Muslims threw stones at Jewish tourists visiting the site on the eve of Yom Kippur Sept. 29, then clashed with police near the Temple Mount Oct. 4. Such incidents are not unusual during the Jewish high holidays, and the U.S. Embassy encouraged Americans to avoid the Old City the entire week of Oct. 2-9. For several days that week officials restricted access to the Temple Mount to Muslim men over the age of 50 and Muslim women, and police remained out in force. Such restrictions could continue if tensions remain high.
