Samoa and American Samoa: Tsunami Slams Islands, Flattens Resorts, Villages

A tsunami triggered by an undersea earthquake about 120 miles from Samoa Sept. 30 devastated resort areas and villages and wiped out the National Park Service headquarters in Pago Pago, American Samoa. The death toll on both island nations and neighboring Tonga was expected to surpass 120. Samoa’s capital, Apia, was largely unharmed.
