Serbia: Attacks on Foreigners in Belgrade

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 1st, 2009 | Trackback

A string of violent incidents in Belgrade targeting foreigners in September prompted the U.S. Embassy to issue an alert informing Americans of the trend. In one incident two French citizens were attacked at an Irish bar popular with expatriates by a large group of Serbian soccer hooligans. One of the Frenchman later died. In another incident, an Australian man was attacked by two youths in a public restroom in Kalemegdan fortress without provocation, apparently because he had spoken English when purchasing items at a souvenir shop. Police arrested 11 suspects in the former incident, and two in the latter. A Libyan man was later attacked and taken to the hospital with a head injury, and a gay pride parade, the first planned in Belgrade since 2001, had to be canceled because authorities said they could not guarantee participants’ safety.
