Thailand: Security Law Imposed in Bangkok, Hua Hin, Cha-Am

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 14th, 2009 | Trackback

Authorities agreed to invoke the Internal Security Act through Oct. 25 in Bangkok’s Dusit district and through Oct. 27 in the coastal resorts of Hua Hin and Cha-Am, where an ASEAN summit and related meetings will be held. The ISA allows a combined force of police and military to control mass rallies to prevent violence. Anti-government “Red Shirt” protesters planned demonstrations in Bangkok Oct. 17 and 24, and authorities are determined to prevent disruption of the summit, which has been postponed twice because of political unrest, first in December and again in April. A security force of some 18,000 officers will be deployed to keep order.
