Guatemala: Pacaya Volcano Continues to Flow; Many Roads Affected by Tropical Storm Agatha
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Authorities warned tourists to stay away from erupting Pacaya volcano and closed Pacaya National Park, but enterprising locals continued to take visitors near the lava flows via a private farm. Emergency officials said the volcano, which erupted dramatically May 27 and killed a reporter in a shower of volcanic rock, is still very dangerous. In other news, hazardous road conditions remain in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Agatha. The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City reported that tourist areas with road problems include Lake Atitlan and surrounding areas in the Department of Solola, Georginas hot baths in Zunil and Almolonga in the Department of Quetzaltenango, Champerico and Tulate in the Department of Retalhuleu, and the archaeological site of Quirigua in the Department of Izabal.
