Bolivia: Protests Greet Decision to Drop Fuel Subsidies

The price of gas shot up 73 percent (diesel fuel 83 percent) when the government ended fuel subsidies that had been in place for six years, prompting violent protests in La Paz. Public transit workers’ unions called for an indefinite national strike and protesters set up roadblocks in El Alto, Villa Fatima and on the road from Trinidad to Santa Cruz. Further unrest is likely and additional blockades are possible. The government removed the subsidies because they created a lucrative black market for gas and diesel fuel in neighboring countries where fuel prices were dramatically higher.
