China: Beijing Battles Gridlock with New Restrictions
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The Chinese government’s latest attempt to ease Beijing’s traffic jams is a limit on new vehicle registrations to 240,000 in 2011, about one-third the number of new cars to hit the streets in 2010. Many of these new vehicles are second cars purchased by families who want to avoid the one-day-a-week ban that is based on license numbers. Beijing residents anticipated the restrictions, however, and registered some 30,000 cars in one week in December. The crush of traffic makes navigating the Chinese capital time-consuming and difficult.
