Northern Ireland: Safer Than England and Wales
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |In a result that may seem counterintuitive, a crime survey published by the Justice Department revealed that Northern Ireland is safer than both England and Wales. The risk of becoming a crime victim in Northern Ireland is 14 percent compared to 21 percent in its two neighbors to the southeast. A University or Ulster criminology expert suggested that because paramilitaries have been weakened through political progress of the last several years, residents of Northern Ireland may be more likely to report crimes than in the past. This would change the statistics some, but the gap in crime rates remains significant.
