Tunisia: Unemployment Protests Rock Tunis
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Tensions are increasing following 10 days of protests over unemployment that left two dead in a country where dissent is seldom tolerated. Demonstrations took place in cities throughout the country, including a rare protest in the capital, Tunis, that drew 2,000 people. The plight of the unemployed is so desperate that a young university graduate set himself on fire when police confiscated the fruit and vegetables he was selling illegally to earn some money. His act sparked the demonstrations, which could continue.
