Australia: Floods, Snakes, Crocodiles, and Not-So-Smart Tourists
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |An unusually wet summer in Queensland has caused Australia’s worst flooding in decades, inundating 22 cities and covering an area as large as France and Germany combined, according to officials. Many parts of the coastal city of Rockhampton remained under water with floodwaters still on the rise Jan. 4. In addition to the danger of swift currents from the flooding Fitzroy River, officials warned that snakes and saltwater crocodiles posed a risk to anyone who entered the water. In other crocodile news, authorities in the Northern Territory were urging tourists to respect the dangers of driving in the area after four Germans had to be plucked from a flooded road in Kakadu National Park near Darwin. They had tried to drive across Magella Creek where the road was three feet under water and got stuck. The area is infested with saltwater crocodiles and a large one had been seen in the vicinity the previous week.
