Bahamas: Unions Threaten General Strike
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Simmering tensions between the prime minister and union leaders raised the possibility of a general strike sometime in the coming weeks. Should the strike occur it could involve all sectors of the economy and disrupt travel throughout the islands. Union leaders are invoking the country’s last general strike of 1958 that shut down New Providence island and eventually led to representative government and majority rule. Today’s issue is the planned privatization of the Bahamas Telecommunications Company.
