Egypt: Echoes of Tunisia Appear in Cairo, Other Cities
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Egyptians turned out in the thousands in Cairo and other cities Jan. 25 to protest the three-decade reign of Hosni Mubarak, demanding government reform and the chance for a better life. The demonstrations were sparked by the recent revolt in Tunisia that brought down the government there, and whether these protests represent something long and lasting or simply a one-time expression of frustration remains to be seen. Cairo has not experienced unrest of this magnitude since the 1970s. Travelers contemplating a visit to Egypt would be prudent to follow media reports closely before going.
