France: Paris Thieves Want Smartphones

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 12th, 2011 | Trackback

Travelers in Paris may have a good reason to be discreet when using their smartphones: according to a New York Times report, aggravated robberies in the public transport system are up more than 40 percent, primarily because thieves are going after those phones. Almost half of all reported thefts in 2010 were of iPhones and their cousins, while about a third were the classic wallet or purse snatchings. Thieves often work in small groups and snatch phones as carriage doors are closing. Sometimes robberies involve use of knives or brass knuckles, but seldom guns. Deaths are uncommon in these incidents, but in December a woman was killed when chasing a robber, and later, an elderly woman was put into a coma when a teenage thief knocked her over.
