Mexico: Legionnaire’s Disease at Wyndham Cozumel Resort & Spa

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 19th, 2011 | Trackback

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control advised that an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease is ongoing at the Regency Club Vacation Resort and Wyndham Cozumel Resort & Spa (formerly Reef Club Cozumel) on the island of Cozumel. The outbreak, which began in May 2008, is restricted to this resort so there is no risk to visitors to Cozumel as a whole. When the outbreak began, authorities recommended disinfection of the resort’s shared water system, which was done, but the CDC was notified of another infection in December 2010, the ninth case associated with the resort. Legionnaires’ disease is caused by inhaling misty water that has been contaminated with bacteria; common sources are hot tubs, spray misters, shower heads and faucets.
