Russia: Moscow Bombing Shows Airport Vulnerability
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The recent suicide bombing in the arrivals area of Moscow’s largest airport underscored the difficulty of securing large public spaces, whether in airports, train stations or other transit hubs. Officials blamed lax airport security for the deadly bombing, but few countries in the world restrict access to these public areas. Israel, Jordan and Pakistan are among the few that set up roadblocks well outside their airports to screen all persons going to the airport. To prevent such attacks, Moscow authorities would have to significantly alter the culture surrounding air travel here, including taxi and other transport driver access to the airport. Considering that the airport was closed for only 20 minutes after the tragedy, it appears unlikely that any such change will take place.
