Tunisia: Unrest Could Continue for Days, Weeks
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The month-long protests that were sparked by an unemployed fruit seller’s self-immolation and drove the president into exile may continue as the new government tries to establish order. Ministers have resigned and sided with the protesters to try to force a new openness in the government and pave the way for credible elections, but nothing is certain. Scores of foreign tourists were caught up in the unrest and had to be evacuated, and many European tour companies have canceled tours until at least mid-February because of safety concerns. Travel here should be deferred until conditions clarify.
