United Kingdom: Beer and Wine Will Soon Be Available in Smaller Glasses
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |When you order a pint of beer here the law says you will get a pint and not a drop less, but that is about to change. New legislation soon to be introduced in parliament will allow bars to sell beer in smaller glasses. Currently the law allows only pints, half pints, and one-third pints, and the pint has to be the 568-millileter (19.2-oz) British size established in 1698. The new law will permit various sizes down to a 75-millileter (2.5-0z) glass for wine samples. The impetus for the law is a desire to bring British drinking laws more in line with modern times and to address the excessive drinking common in Britain, where alcohol consumption has increased 40 percent since 1970 while it has dropped in many European countries.
