Egypt: Tourism Workers Implore Visitors to Return
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The exhilaration of the people-power movement that brought down Hosni Mubarak may last a long time, but one thing everyone hopes will pass is the loss of tourists. Such popular attractions as the Giza Pyramids and the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh have been virtually empty of tourists since the demonstrations began in January. Tourism represents 11 percent of the national economy and tour guides rallied at the Pyramids Feb. 14, calling on international travelers to return because their livelihoods depend on it and they say Egypt is safe for travel. It may be prudent, however, to wait another couple of weeks until the situation stabilizes before traveling there.
