India: The Life of a Tout Just Gets Tougher
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The life of a tout in India isn’t easy, and in Rajasthan’s Jaipur it’s about to get tougher. The Tourist Assistant Force, a special tourist police division, rounds up touts who harass tourists or lead them to showrooms where prices are inflated and the touts get kickbacks. Once in custody, the TAF hands them over to police. But enforcement has been lax and the touts usually are released the next day and go right back to work on the streets. Now the TAF is setting up a database to keep track of repeat offenders, and those who are caught twice will be released only upon posting a bond, and repeat offenders face up to seven years in prison.
