Mexico: Popular Chiapas Waterfall Is Center of Land Dispute

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | February 9th, 2011 | Trackback

The Agua Azul waterfall tourist area in the southern state of Chiapas has been the subject of a dispute spanning the last decade, and in early February leftist Zapatista sympathizers held 17 tourists hostage for a day after a clash with government-aligned farmers. The spot, popular among hikers, bird-watchers, painters and photographers, has been under the administration of local farmers, but since 2000 Zapatista sympathizers have been fighting for control. Though the abductors freed the tourists unharmed, those planning to travel to the waterfall should be aware of the possibility of future conflict.
