Bahrain: Escalation in Conflict Between Government Forces and Protesters
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |Confrontations between police and protesters continued to intensify, Saudi Arabia sent in troops to support the royal family and control the protesters, and Bahrain’s king declared a three-month state of emergency. The strong government response to the protests earned the condemnation of British officials, and the British government issued a warning for foreigners within Bahrain to stay inside as much as possible. The U.S. Embassy advised Americans to limit their movements to essential purposes only. The arrival of Saudi troops stoked fears that the violence was growing out of control and marked a significant escalation of tensions between the government and opposition.
