Côte d’Ivoire: Violence Grows in City of Abidjan
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |Violence continues in Côte d’Ivoire as new clashes broke out in Abidjan when troops loyal to the controversial leader Laurent Gbagbo launched a mortar attack that killed at least 25 people March 17. In total, the fighting has killed more than 430 people since Gbagbo refused to step down after the election of Alassane Ouattara, the U.N.-certified winner of the November presidential contest. A large humanitarian crisis is forming as it is estimated that more than 75 thousand Ivorian citizens have fled into Liberia. Travelers are advised against traveling to Côte d’Ivoire, once a showcase of stability on the African continent.
