Russia: Security Concerns Surrounding 2014 Winter Olympics

Security concerns over the 2014 Winter Olympic Games continue to grow. Sochi, the Russian resort that will host the games, lies at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains, home to numerous extremist groups. Many top officials maintain, however, that the games will be safe because of the geographical isolation of Sochi, which sits on the other side of the mountains from the Caucasus region, making it difficult to travel between the two areas. Still, the threat persists as indicated by recent terrorist activity in the region against tourists. Those planning on traveling to the area should be mindful of the security in place and attentive when in public.
