Thailand: Deadly Virus Contracted From Contaminated Food in Chiang Mai
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |The mysterious deaths of five people in Chiang Mai this year prompted health authorities to ask the World Health Organization to help examine the cases to determine the cause of death. Four of the five victims—two Britons, an American, a New Zealander and a Thai—stayed in Chiang Mai’s Downtown Inn, and at least one of them had symptoms of food poisoning. The New Zealander had Coxsackie B virus in her body, and officials speculate that the victims contracted the virus from eating contaminated food. The virus can spread from human to human and causes stomach upsets and sometimes heart damage. Authorities vowed to increase measures to control hygiene at food stalls, street markets, restaurants and guest houses.
