New Zealand: Aftershocks still Plague Christchurch

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | June 15th, 2011 | Trackback

Nearly four months after the Christchurch earthquake, one of the worst natural disasters in the country’s history, the city is still suffering from large aftershocks. A series of powerful tremors hit the city June 13 and June 15, one measured at magnitude 6.0, and caused serious damage. Bob Parker, Christchurch’s mayor, said that more earthquakes could be expected. Since the original earthquake in February, more than 50,000 people have relocated elsewhere in New Zealand and Australia. The recovery effort continues, however, as more than 10,000 homes and 1,000 commercial buildings are scheduled to be demolished and countless other buildings have already been destroyed. Travelers planning to visit the area should stay up-to-date on the most recent conditions in and around Christchurch.
