Northern Ireland: Tensions Build as July 12 Approaches
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |Police vehicles were attacked as violence continued for a second night in east Belfast June 21. The tensions boiled over from Monday from Short Strand, a small Catholic enclave in Belfast, where some 500 people were involved in violent street demonstrations that evolved from the Ulster Volunteer Force’s attack on homes with bricks, fireworks and smoke bombs. Sectarian violence between Catholics and Protestants typically builds as July 12 approaches, which is a holiday when thousands of Protestants from the Orange Order brotherhood march across Northern Ireland. Travelers in Northern Ireland ahead of the holiday should be mindful of increased tensions and should avoid marching routes on July 12.
