Australia: Beach Goers must Exercise Caution

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | July 5th, 2011 | Trackback

A humpback whale knocked a 13-year-old boy unconscious after the whale hit the boy’s dinghy with its tail. The boy, who was fishing with his parents off the coast of New South Wales, also broke his collarbone. Australia is a mecca of beach and ocean activities, but this incident serves as a reminder to tourists to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Encounters with whales are exceedingly rare, but other ocean risks exist, including the occasional shark attack, undertows and rough surf.
