Bahrain: Country still Divided Despite Reform Talks
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |Bahrain remains deeply divided after months of upheaval and two months of martial law. Talks of reform and opening the political process are beginning, however, as King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa opened a political dialogue July 5, saying all options were on the table. Despite this effort, Shi’ite Muslims—a majority of the population in the Sunni-ruled country—held a demonstration, expressing anger that the opposition had decided to participate in talks. Shi’ite complaints of discrimination continue. Travelers should pay attention to security developments and the pace of the dialogue before visiting Bahrain.
