Russia: North Caucasus still a Concern

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | July 25th, 2011 | Trackback

Four policemen were killed and nine others were wounded during two separate blasts in Russia’s North Caucasus July 18. One bomb went off in Chechnya and the other in Dagestan. For years, Russia has been battling Islamist separatist groups in the North Caucasus, with Dagestan bearing much of the brunt of the fighting. Federal Security Service (FSB) chief Alexander Bortnikov said that 169 terrorist attacks have occurred in the first six months of 2011 in Russia, with Dagestan being the most complicated and dangerous area for terrorism. Travelers planning to visit the area for the approaching Winter Olympics in Sochi should be aware of ongoing security concerns.
