China: Hightened Security at Shanghai and Beijing Airports means Longer Lines

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | August 31st, 2011 | Trackback

The China Civil Aviation authority raised its security standard to level 2 at Shanghai and Beijing airports Aug. 29. This came as a surprise to most passengers, more of whom will now be asked to remove their shoes and belts. At least 50 percent of passengers will also be asked to open their carry-on baggage for thorough searches. More than 100 flights have been delayed as a result of the surprise security change, which has brought with it long lines and disgruntled travelers. Press reports suggested that the security upgrade could be in response to knives and other banned items found at an airport in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Passengers have been advised to arrive at the airport two to three hours before departure, instead of the normal one to two hours.
