Cuba: Relaxed Travel Rules Take Americans to Cuba
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |Thirty American tourists were the first to arrive in Cuba under the new, more relaxed travel rules of the Obama administration. The “people-to-people” exchanges are aimed at advancing the flow of information between the island nation and the United States. It is estimated that some 30 to 35 travel agencies have obtained licenses to permit travel to areas of interest such as museums, orphanages, medical facilities and even historic Old Havana. The new rules call on travel to be “purposeful,” meaning that it must have some educational aspect and include interaction with Cubans. Some estimate that as many as 100,000 Americans will visit Cuba this year under the new rules.
