Haiti: Abductee Rescued; Fears of Kidnappings Remain

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | August 31st, 2011 | Trackback

A U.S. citizen who was abducted from his home in Port-au-Prince has been rescued in a hillside shantytown south of the capital city. Men posing as employees of a package delivery service kidnapped Frank Jean-Baptiste last week, which prompted the U.S. Embassy to issue advice on what to do if abducted and to warn Americans in Haiti to remain alert. Jean-Baptiste’s abduction happened the same week that a well-known notary was taken from his car and later found dead in the street. Though kidnappings were once rare in Haiti, they have been on the rise since former president Jean-Bertrand Aristride was toppled in 2004. Kidnappings tend to spike in Haiti leading up to Christmas.
