Israel: Temporary Ceasefire Announced

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | August 30th, 2011 | Trackback

Following five days of conflict, Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian group that governs the Gaza Strip, were reported to have reached a ceasefire. Tensions have risen steadily since Aug. 18 when a group of Palestinian gunmen shot dead eight Israelis in the Negev desert. Israel pursued the gunmen and also launched a series of retaliatory air strikes against Gaza’s Popular Resistance Party (PRC), killing 15 people, including the leader of the PRC and other militants. Palestinian militants then fired an estimated 100 rockets into Israel. On Aug. 22, the PRC—the last militant group to agree to the ceasefire—called the deal temporary. Travelers should be aware of the heightened tensions around the Gaza Strip leading up to the expected United Nations vote on Palestinian statehood in September.
