Mexico: Popular Resort City Seeing Violence
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |In the resort city of Acapulco, at least 13 people were killed Aug. 15-18 in organized crime gangs’ attacks on taxi drivers and buses. Guerrero state officials said that the assailants targeted these people because of alleged collaboration with rival gangs. Cartel Independiente de Acapulco is said to be in a drug-war with rival Comando del Diablo, and as a result, numerous shootouts have occurred in the streets of Acapulco and other parts of Guerrero. Such violence usually occurs outside the main tourist areas, but in the past has spilled over to Acapulco’s tourist strip. Tourism industry leaders believe that the ongoing drug violence is partially to blame for Acapulco’s decline in visitors.
