Syria: The U.S. State Department Issues Strong Travel Warning
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |The U.S. State Department urged all citizens to immediately depart from Syria while commercial travel is still available. Citizens who must remain in Syria were advised against all nonessential travel and those who are not yet in Syria have been told to defer all travel plans. The State Department ordered all family members of U.S. government employees and non-emergency personnel to depart from Syria on April 25. The Embassy is still operational to the extent possible given the evolving security concerns. Intense anti-government protests began in March and have been combated by brutal government retaliations and suppression of dissent. Several cities have been placed under heightened security. Rights groups say some 1,700 people have been killed in the crackdowns.
