Trinidad and Tobago: Limited State of Emergency

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | August 30th, 2011 | Trackback

The government declared a state of limited emergency rule designed to halt a surge in violent crime. Believed to be related to the drug trade within the small two-island nation, the violence has coincided with recent drug seizures that police hope will stifle the use of Trinidad as a transshipment point for cocaine from South America to Europe and the United Sates. Emergency rule includes dusk-to-dawn curfews and broader powers for authorities to conduct search and seizures as well as to make arrests. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar cited the recent killing of 11 people over the weekend as one of the triggers that led her to impose emergency rule. Travelers planning to visit the islands should be aware of these security concerns and the measures that are being implemented to address them.
