Turkey: Explosion at Popular Resort

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | August 31st, 2011 | Trackback

An explosion injured an estimated 15 people at the Kemer resort in Antalya, a destination popular among foreign tourists. The explosive went off beneath the sand, sending pebbles flying around sun loungers and those on the beach. Most injuries were reportedly minor, with victims only having to receive emergency outpatient medical attention. Initial reports described the explosion as a “bomb attack,” though the Dagens Nyheter daily newspaper reported that authorities believed that a small gas hose caused the explosion. No groups claimed responsibility, and the Antalya governor’s office said that the cause of the explosion was still unknown.
