United Kingdom: Riots on the Streets of London
By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink |Violence that erupted in London Aug. 6 spread to other cities and caused the government to deploy some 16,000 police officers overnight Aug. 9 in the British capital. The chaos began with the death of a 29-year-old male who was shot by a police officer. Rumors of widespread violence circulated, but as of Aug. 9 the only riots confirmed by police were in Wolverhampton and West Bromwich, about 100 miles north of London, and the northwestern city of Manchester. Almost 700 people were arrested in London alone in the worst unrest in the city since 1985, but the situation appeared to be calming Aug. 10. Travelers should stay up-to-date with current security issues and avoid all areas of disorder.
