Vietnam: United Nations Warns of Avian Flu Virus Resurgence

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | August 31st, 2011 | Trackback

On Aug. 29, the United Nations warned of the resurgence of the Avian Flu Virus, saying that a mutant strain may be spreading through Asia. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the variant strain, which can apparently bypass vaccines and poses unpredictable risks to humans, has appeared in Vietnam and China. The circulation of the virus in Vietnam threatens Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Japan and the Korean peninsula. While migratory patterns of birds spread the virus naturally, human poultry production and marketing also increase the virus’s reach. FAO Chief Veterinary Officer Juan Lubroth said that preparedness and surveillance are essential to prevent the virus from rapidly spreading. Travelers may want to stay away from poultry farms, both urban and rural.
