Cayman Islands: Sharp Spike in Murders

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | September 21st, 2011 | Trackback

The Cayman Islands’ governor reacted with horror and disgust to a recent spike in murders, when four killings happened in a six-day span. The police commissioner reported that increased numbers of uniformed and armed police officers on duty will stay in place to thwart more acts of violence. An increased police presence in 2010 stopped a surge of violence and produced a period of almost a year without a murder. Three of the recent crimes occurred in the West Bay district of Grand Cayman, but the fourth happened in George Town, the capital. The violence is believed to be gang related, though killings in George Town are especially worrisome because it is a popular port for cruise ships. The Cayman Islands serve as a large offshore financial center, and their economy is largely dependent on tourism. While tourists might be alarmed at the recent murders, the governor indicated that all options within the law to prevent more bloodshed are being considered.
