Europe: Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Spreading

By Larry Habegger and Andrew Davis | Permalink | No Comments | September 21st, 2011 | Trackback

A highly drug resistant form of tuberculosis is spreading quickly across Europe, where reports of the disease tripled in 2009 from 2008. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the six countries with the highest rates of this deadly form of the disease are in Europe. London’s Brent borough, the home to Wembley stadium, leads Europe in infection rates. WHO’s European officials partially blame the emergence of this deadly air-born bacteria on inadequate treatment and poor air-born toxin control. Other European countries with high infection rates are Bulgaria, France, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Russia, Spain and Ukraine. Tuberculosis is contracted by inhaling the bacteria, which is most often spread when an infected person coughs. Travelers should be aware of the infected regions and take precautions to avoid contraction.
